Peach Connection.com celebrates the achievements of African Americans and their contributions to the city of Atlanta, the nation, and the world. Please join us in our celebration by observing the influential’s that paved the way for equality, justice, and freedom for African Americans.

The granddaughter of freed slaves, Edna Lewis is an inspiration to the history and art of Southern cuisine. Lewis learned how to cook in her Aunt Jenny’s Virginia kitchen on a wood fired stove. They measured using coins, piling powder on pennies, salt on dimes, and baking soda on nickels because they had no measuring spoons or scales. Lewis could tell when a cake was done by listening.

Lewis went on to open Café Nicholson in New York City (Manhattan) an unfathomable feat for most Blacks at that time. At Café Nicholson, she did all the cooking. She wrote acclaimed cookbooks and is still an inspiration to many culinary connoisseurs and food lovers. On February 13, 2006 Edna Lewis died at the age of 89 in her Decatur, GA home.

Soul Food Museum

Did you know that the spoon you use to eat ice cream or stir the honey in your Green tea was invented by African-Americans? Or how about the potato chips you love to eat while at a Super Bowl party, an African American invented those also.

The National African American Culinary Arts and Hospitality Association (www.naacaha.com), or NAACAHA, wants to ensure these historical truths are preserved for all to reference. That is why it established the NAACAHA Soul Food Museum along with its food expo and awards show, all which highlights and acknowledges the generosities African Americans have made to the culinary and hospitality industries.

Situated in a small space at 210 Auburn Avenue on "Soul Food Row" in Atlanta's historic Sweet Auburn district, the Soul Food Museum opened in August 2005 and will relocate to a larger facility a few doors away from its current home later this year.

All are invited to attend the 5th Annual Black History Month Southern Heritage Food Expo and African American Culinary Arts Awards. For more information on this event or tickets, contact Dr. Kenneth Willhoite at (404) 917-2665 or via email at drwillhoite@yahoo.com. For information and tickets, go to www.naacaha.com

Inspired by a hot flash and a bottle of wine, this hilarious musical rendition of “the change” has been entertaining and educating women from coast-to-coast for more than five years.
